How it all started...
Calvary Baptist Church was incorporated in January of 1955 but our story began further back with the fervent prayers of men and women attending First Baptist Church San Marcos who saw the need for a new mission to be started in the burgeoning town.
The charter group purchased land and moved an old army barracks building to 400 Uhland Road to begin a new work. Pastor Joe Thielepape served as the new mission's first pastor and Calvary was on its way. For the next 50 years, Calvary Baptist Church would enjoy growth and ministry at its original location under several pastors and staff including its current Senior Pastor, Dennis Spire, who came to Calvary in January of 1990. Calvary had outgrown its location by the time Pastor Dennis came, but continued to grow further. Sometime around 1998, as Calvary was pushing its occupancy limits with two Sunday services, Pastor Dennis began to sense the Lord leading him to begin looking for a new piece of land where Calvary could move and expand and where the church could worship together at one time. Pastor Dennis specifically felt the need for a church to be on Interstate 35, highly visible and accessible and began to pray for the right piece of land. After being blessed with the land and a supportive and enthusiastic congregation, "The Courageous Journey" began to raise money and begin plans to build a new home for this growing church body.
In 2008, Calvary held its first occupancy service for Easter at 1906 Interstate 35. The facilities had been largely constructed by Pastor Dennis and the congregants of Calvary in a two and a half year concentrated building process. By June of 2008, we received our certificate of occupancy and have enjoyed the blessing of the Lord at this new location.
Our church is an eclectic mixture of people from all walks of life, demographics, and traditions, but the one thing we all have in common is Jesus. Our desire is to celebrate our life in Him and to show our love for Him by serving Him, serving others, and giving our lives for the expansion of the Kingdom of God on earth.
